For some some time now I have been harping on Facebook and Twitter that this year is the year of the tablet. With the explosive popularity of the iPad, the mass of Android based devices set for release, not to mention Windows and WebOS based devices coming, it truly is shaping up as an avalanche of a new device class. These devices are optimized for lightweight media consumption that includes eBooks, web content, digital newspapers and magazines, as well as multimedia. While many will have high speed data connections via mobile operators (3G and 4G) many more will rely on wifi which means they will spend much of their mobile time in disconnected mode. Individuals and organizations need to take this new reality in to account as they fashion their communication and marketing plans. Thankfully, the steps to providing a satisfying mobile disconnected experience can be easily accomplished using familiar desktop tools from Microsoft Office such as Word 2010 and/or Publisher 2010. Additionally, easy distribution of the produced content can be accomplished using built in features of of web based entities such as SharePoint Server.
In this edition of Michael on the Go I discuss the factors that will force a recognition of this new communications paradigm, the re-purposing of the old newsletter as well as new approaches to reaching this audience, and the technical means by which anyone can readily engage the ever growing tablet and eBook audience.

As many of us find the daily demands on our lives increasing our tolerance for technology that requires excessive configuration and maintenance is correspondingly diminishing. Couple that with a high bar for user experience being set by by platforms such as the Flip Video Camera System, iPhone, and others and the expectation that hardware/software will function seamlessly in a more device/appliance manner is one that is not only an increasing reality in the consumer market but also taking route elsewhere.
In this episode of Michael on the Go I discuss what i perceive as the reasoning around the decreasing tolerance as well as things to keep in mind when developing solutions/products for both internal enterprise employees as well as external customers.

I recorded this several days ago but thought I would quick get it out during lunch. A lot has changed since I ran my top 10 applications for the Windows Phone on the Windows Phone blog. In this video I run down my latest top 5 Windows Phone applications that I use most frequently on my HTC Ozone Windows Phone running 6.5. You may be surprised at what is tops and why.

As a technologist it is easy to get caught up in all the latest trends around social computing / Social Networking / Social Media / Social Whatever… There are new services popping up and becoming us to give them a try and existing ones continuing to evolve and roll out new features almost daily to keep our attention. Couple that with a rough economy where we are all scrambling to stay relevant and employed and it can make for a rather hectic, PC centric, lifestyle.
During the month of August, my relatives in Italy, and many others, put away their PC’s and PDA’s and get away some unplugged, restorative time with family and friends. They relax and engage in some real social networking, face to face. It’s important for us all to take some time to get away, re-connect, and spend face time with those who are significant in our lives. It would be great if we could just snap our fingers and find ourselves on a secluded beach, or sipping wine on a carefree piazza. While that may not be possible with work and financial situations it is possible to take a little time, some simple ingredients, and create our own little get away where we can refresh, recharge, and reconnect.
In today’s special Michael on the Go episode I show how you can quickly take some simple ingredients like bread, cheese, tomato, basil, and wine, toss in a little music via Zune, and top off with some candles to create a magical get away that will help you refresh and reconnect with loved ones, friends, and family. It doesn’t cost much, it’s simple (if I can stumble through this, anyone can), it’s quick, and best of all, you can set up a getaway like this any time you want/need.
Want to switch up the menu with something different? Head over to a site like http://www.foodnetwork.com and switch things up (for an Italian flair we like Giada’s recipes from http://www.foodnetwork.com/everyday-italian/index.html ) Whatever the case, take a look then get started with your own little getaway’s and start engaging in some real social networking. You’ll be glad you did! :-)
