8/23/2010This morning while waiting for my turn as part of an all day client onsite one of our reps contacted me. They had a client looking for some information about online resources around Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise Content Management resources. I grabbed the following 3 solid starting points for him and his client and am passing along here to all of you who may have similar interests. Happy ECMing 8/20/2010
Update: the events date/locations have changed. Please see the updated schedule here http://socialmedia.mikegannotti.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=461

“Enterprises should realize that they gain the highest return on workplace initiatives that focus on individual worker productivity as well as enterprise and team collaboration and innovation.” The Gartner Group
Technology is changing the nature of work, and the workplace as well…it has become an increasingly challenging environment. A few things play into that challenge:
Consumerization of IT
· Insecure, risky consumer-grade applications installed by enterprise users
· Demand for popular capabilities (social networks, IM, blogging, mashups, etc.) at work
· Sharing of enterprise data on public networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)
Multigenerational workforce
· 3 generations – Boomers (b.1946-1962), GenX (1963-1980), Millennials (b.1981-2000) with different workstyles and attitudes toward technology
· 80 million Millennials in US, 3.6B worldwide – 4 million enter US workforce each year
· Boomers deferring retirement, second careers
Rise of the Cloud
· Main customer concerns: control, security – still questions about cloud in minds of some
· 80% of large enterprise IT managers are at least in trials for cloud computing
· Most enterprises looking at hybrid cloud/on-premise deployments
Infrastructure cost and complexity
· Too many systems/vendors in data center
· Average $1 B company maintains 48 disparate financial systems
· Complicated by M&A activity, need to maintain legacy systems
Diverse and distributed workforce
· Remote workers – 84% of organizations have a remote workforce
· Increasingly sophisticated mobile apps, mobile devices
Increasing use of contingent staff, contractors, outsourcing |

8/7/2010Starting this week I will be hitting the road with overnights almost every week for the next few months. At each stop I will be hanging out for a SharePint social and would love to kick back with you! I have already started posting some of these events at the new social media site for my district, http://www.seproductivity.com Some immediate events include a SharePint event in Charlotte NC this Tuesday night and another in Omaha NE the week after that. Following these will be weekly ones in Ft Lauderdale FL, Tampa FL, Birmingham AL, Atlanta GA, Raleigh NC, Charlotte NC, and Jacksonville FL. I will be posting details for these as well as the upcoming weekly productivity webcasts and Coffee Talk morning show throughout this week as the final event details are nailed down. Be sure to visit http://www.seproductivity.com to see the latest event listings. Also, with your visits you will see the site finally starting to take shape. Yesterday, resident Productivity Pundit Marvin Mitchell installed the SharePoint Productivity Hub on the site and he will be adjusting that for anonymous access this week. In the meantime you can access its content under the Resources dropdown navigation. There will also be a doubling of listed pundits over the next week and you will start to see the regular contribution of content by those pundits over the next two weeks. Finally, are you a Microsoft Partner/ISV with solutions/offerings around Microsoft productivity products? The contact me if you would like a listing on our Solutions Central. Well I hope to see you in one of the cities I will be visiting as well as online for the upcoming productivity weekly webcasts and morning show. In the meantime it’s a beautiful Saturday here in North Carolina and I have to go pick up and spread rock for a new walkway. After that I will be kicking back for the second to last day of my parents visit from California as well as first day of my son Sam’s return from his college (stayed in Ohio to work this summer and took 3 classes). So have a great one, mark your calendars for a SharePint, and enjoy the rest of the weekend. Ciao! 7/22/2010
With the release of SharePoint 2010, customers are seeing a huge leap forward in social media capabilities that were previously supplied via software vendor add-ons like NewsGator SocialSites for SharePoint 2007. With advances like the revamped MySites, updated blogs and wikis, tag clouds and more many clients have been asking me the question, “Mike do I really need NewsGator for SharePoint 2010?” A few weeks ago I sat down with the folks from NewsGator and they showed me their all new SocialSites for SharePoint 2010 and all I can say is wow!! They took the great work done by the SharePoint team, then put things in to overdrive and really took it to a whole new level that all clients should at least take a hard look at as they look to leverage social media capabilities both internally and on the Internet.
In today’s Social Media Samurai episode I run through what NewsGator terms their great eight primary features of the new SocialSites for SharePoint 2010. These include:
- Advanced RSS
- Social Profiles
- Expertise Discovery
- Ideas
- Communities
- Activity Stream
- Rich Clients
- Microblogging
NewsGator SocialSites Video
So now that I may have piqued your curiosity around around SocialSites why don’t you head on over to the NewsGator site and check out their offering in more detail.
SharePoint 2010 and NewsGator SocialSites are a powerful one two combination that can really push your social efforts to the next level so check it out today.

For some some time now I have been harping on Facebook and Twitter that this year is the year of the tablet. With the explosive popularity of the iPad, the mass of Android based devices set for release, not to mention Windows and WebOS based devices coming, it truly is shaping up as an avalanche of a new device class. These devices are optimized for lightweight media consumption that includes eBooks, web content, digital newspapers and magazines, as well as multimedia. While many will have high speed data connections via mobile operators (3G and 4G) many more will rely on wifi which means they will spend much of their mobile time in disconnected mode. Individuals and organizations need to take this new reality in to account as they fashion their communication and marketing plans. Thankfully, the steps to providing a satisfying mobile disconnected experience can be easily accomplished using familiar desktop tools from Microsoft Office such as Word 2010 and/or Publisher 2010. Additionally, easy distribution of the produced content can be accomplished using built in features of of web based entities such as SharePoint Server.
In this edition of Michael on the Go I discuss the factors that will force a recognition of this new communications paradigm, the re-purposing of the old newsletter as well as new approaches to reaching this audience, and the technical means by which anyone can readily engage the ever growing tablet and eBook audience.
