Smart phones are everywhere. Not a day goes by without some news story about the latest iPhone, Android devices and more. This year though Microsoft is making a huge splash back in the market with Windows Phone 7. While out here my conference roommate was lucky enough to get one and after seeing it in action for a few days all I can say is, WOW! The consumer focused functionality is off the hook and as a collaboration specialist I have been absolutely blown away by its deep capability around Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Ultimately though in this world of smart phones and user experience it still comes down to applications. With Windows Phone 7 the opportunity for development is better than ever. In this special TechReady 11 Michael on the Go episode I speak with Windows Phone Senior Product Manager Loke Uei Tan about Windows Phone 7 development and developer opportunities. Loke is THE man in Windows Phone development evangelism and I was glad I had the opportunity to catch up with him on the latest in Windows Phone dev.

For some some time now I have been harping on Facebook and Twitter that this year is the year of the tablet. With the explosive popularity of the iPad, the mass of Android based devices set for release, not to mention Windows and WebOS based devices coming, it truly is shaping up as an avalanche of a new device class. These devices are optimized for lightweight media consumption that includes eBooks, web content, digital newspapers and magazines, as well as multimedia. While many will have high speed data connections via mobile operators (3G and 4G) many more will rely on wifi which means they will spend much of their mobile time in disconnected mode. Individuals and organizations need to take this new reality in to account as they fashion their communication and marketing plans. Thankfully, the steps to providing a satisfying mobile disconnected experience can be easily accomplished using familiar desktop tools from Microsoft Office such as Word 2010 and/or Publisher 2010. Additionally, easy distribution of the produced content can be accomplished using built in features of of web based entities such as SharePoint Server.
In this edition of Michael on the Go I discuss the factors that will force a recognition of this new communications paradigm, the re-purposing of the old newsletter as well as new approaches to reaching this audience, and the technical means by which anyone can readily engage the ever growing tablet and eBook audience.

In this episode of 3 Minute Adventures I discuss and demonstrate mobile access views in SharePoint 2010. With today’s information workers increasingly mobile the ability to access content from mobile devices is increasingly important. Given the screen real-estate though of the typical Smartphone it is not enough that the devices browser can access content. SharePoint 2010 takes things to another level by offering a rich, mobile optimized experience out of the box.

While driving my son back to Ohio he was busy showing off to me all the features of his new Motorola Droid phone and having fun rubbing in it in that my own device was not "cool" in his words. Of all the features he was most excited about the ability to search for content, locations, and such using his voice was top of his list. It's funny because I have been able to do the same thing on my own HTC Ozone Windows Phone for quite a while as well. Now admittedly my own device does not exactly exude coolness but when it comes to voice search it rocks. In today's Michael on the Go video I demonstrate the use of voice search on the Windows Phone platform using the Bing application in 2 scenarios. The first of which is a real use of the functionality to get my car scheduled for service and the second is to find a bite to eat.

Well that appointment I made for my car in the video… time to get moving and run it over ;-) Have a great day and Ciao!

While on the road he did some experimenting with mobile video recording with his new Droid phone and we discussed a few tips around improving impromptu mobile video recording. In today’s geocast video, made possible with mobile video software from IncaX LiveMeida GPS I discuss those tips. 3/3/2010
**The following is a repost of an entry I did on the Windows Phone blog on Monday, re-shared here in case you missed it.
With all the buzz lately around the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series it’s easy to lose site of some of the amazing things that can already be accomplished today with Windows Phones as a part of the powerfully integrated Microsoft stack. Last week I had the pleasure of spending a day with some amazing folks who are doing some incredible things with Windows Phone, Microsoft Azure, Silverlight, Bing Maps, SharePoint, Photosynth and more all brought to life by the geocast goodness of Microsoft partner IncaX. Office of Naval Research (ONR), has been utilizing these technologies to help the US Navy as well as local law enforcement on the North Carolina coastline to evaluate the capabilities of their emergency response units. Conceived by Dano Debroux, Director, Disruptive Business Technologies (ONR), and supported by IncaX, HP, and Microsoft, the geocast efforts by the Office of Naval Research are a great demonstration of how the Microsoft technology can be used in a variety of extreme situations, including military, law enforcement, disaster relief, and more.
In today’s video we head out on another Productivity Adventure and see the work that has been done by the ONR first hand. To see its initial use we will observe a sea based emergency response scenario. We also hear how the use of these technologies has been received in the field and they are impacting training exercise evaluations. Finally, we actually get to head out in to the field with some great folks form the US Navy where we stimulant an insurgent bomb placement to test sensor equipment and special response team effectiveness. In the final scenario we actually carry HP Glisten Windows Phones to capture and transmit the entire mission. Although the video is somewhat unpolished, I think you will still find the use of geocasting in the scenarios pretty compelling.

The scenarios portrayed are really enabled through the power of IncaX LiveMedia GPS, a solution built entirely on the Microsoft stack. Though running today on existing Windows Phones, IncaX is already poised to deliver new enhanced capability for the next generation Windows Phone 7 Series.
