“Enterprises should realize that they gain the highest return on workplace initiatives that focus on individual worker productivity as well as enterprise and team collaboration and innovation.” The Gartner Group
Technology is changing the nature of work, and the workplace as well…it has become an increasingly challenging environment. A few things play into that challenge:
Consumerization of IT
· Insecure, risky consumer-grade applications installed by enterprise users
· Demand for popular capabilities (social networks, IM, blogging, mashups, etc.) at work
· Sharing of enterprise data on public networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)
Multigenerational workforce
· 3 generations – Boomers (b.1946-1962), GenX (1963-1980), Millennials (b.1981-2000) with different workstyles and attitudes toward technology
· 80 million Millennials in US, 3.6B worldwide – 4 million enter US workforce each year
· Boomers deferring retirement, second careers
Rise of the Cloud
· Main customer concerns: control, security – still questions about cloud in minds of some
· 80% of large enterprise IT managers are at least in trials for cloud computing
· Most enterprises looking at hybrid cloud/on-premise deployments
Infrastructure cost and complexity
· Too many systems/vendors in data center
· Average $1 B company maintains 48 disparate financial systems
· Complicated by M&A activity, need to maintain legacy systems
Diverse and distributed workforce
· Remote workers – 84% of organizations have a remote workforce
· Increasingly sophisticated mobile apps, mobile devices
Increasing use of contingent staff, contractors, outsourcing |

In this special edition of Michael on the Go I am joined by fellow road warriors Anish Patel and Brett Austin as we answer questions posted to my Facebook account. In the final video of this series Anish and Brett discuss a new feature in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 called PowerPoint Broadcasting. With PowerPoint Broadcasting you can reach out and present to any web capable pc or mobile device using the native functionality of PowerPoint 2010. The only thing that is required to view them is a browser. This is not simply HTML converted presentations but actually presenter controlled dynamic content. Tune in and find out how you can start leveraging this new feature today.

In this special edition of Michael on the Go I am joined by fellow road warriors Anish Patel and Brett Austin as we answer questions posted to my Facebook account. Today's question from a reader focuses on video editing tools as well as tips for users who need to use video in a presentation but may not be technically savvy with video editing. As we continue our 3 person road trip Brett Austin primarily fields this question talking about a hidden gem that he has been showing to customers along these lines that is now built right in to Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint 2010 also has an additional capability that helps with social media efforts that is highlighted as well in this video clip. So grab some popcorn, turn down the lights and get set for some cinema presentation goodness ;-)
Next up in the final video from this road trip Brett and Anish discuss another new feature for PowerPoint presenters for pushing out presentations live over the Internet and even smart phone devices.

*The following is a cross post of a blog posting I made earlier today to the SharePoint Experts Blog
This past year, really starting back in October, has been an amazing one. In October we had the annual SharePoint conference in Los Vegas and this time the conference welcomed the addition of Microsoft Office. The energy and excitement by product users, partners and vendors was amazing and readily evident everywhere you went. That was just the beginning. During the interim time the amazing folks back in Redmond who had been working on SharePoint and Office continued to keep their eyes on the mark as they worked to finish off a product stack unlike any other in terms of productivity enablement. Even as the product teams raced to complete their offerings excitement continued to snowball amongst customers and demand for presentations on SharePoint/Office 2010 increased. Along the way folks clamored for access to Excel Services with PowerPivot, Access Services, Visio Services, Digital Asset Management and video streaming, and so on. For quite some time I have been saying that in terms of being a game changer this is the most significant product release by Microsoft since Windows 95 and the energy and demand around it are truly evidence of the impact potential this release has. Still though, demand has been around a beta offering, not quite ready for production systems (although several organizations readily implemented that same beta offering in production) until now.
Today marks the official launch of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010!! To kick off the launch there are a number of events and resources to help customers, partners, and vendors get the information they need to get ramped up. First and foremost Microsoft has set up a website to host a worldwide virtual launch. Yes the site is running on SharePoint 2010! You can find the launch site here. There will be a series of live webcasts delivered from the site starting with the big kickoff at 11am EDT. In all there will be a total of 20 live webcast at different times that you can tune in to depending on your area of interest and focus so be sure to take some time and tune in!
Today is a day so many of us have been waiting for and I am so glad it is finally here. I can't wait to see the innovative ways in which customers will be using SharePoint Server 2010 and Office 2010 to solve real world business problems with this new powerful set of tools at their disposal. Productivity with these products truly will be a grand adventure. Below are several resources to help get you started. :-)
One last thing. If you are twittering about the launch today like I will be as @gannotti be sure to include the hashtag #join2010

In this episode of 3 Minute Adventures I discuss and demonstrate the use of shared OneNote workbooks in SharePoint 2010. As teams come together around projects and initiatives the need to capture data, be able to readily reference it, and use it for decision making, becomes vitally important. One vital area of data often overlooked is meeting minutes. Often times the process of capturing the key information of a given meeting falls to one hapless individual who then must juggle the process of taking meeting notes and participating in the meeting itself. By doing so only a single persons perspective is captured and much may be missed. By setting up a shared OneNote workbook in a SharePoint 2010 Meeting Workplace teams can now all take part in creating dynamic meeting minutes that capture the entire teams perspective of any given meeting.
